Plant-based diets are a hot topic in renal nutrition. Understand the research behind the use of plant-based diets for patients with CKD and how they can improve acidosis, blood sugar, hypertension and even manage potassium and phosphorus levels. This session will cover how plant-based diets can be helpful for patients in all stages of kidney disease - from newly diagnosed to dialysis.

Melanie Betz MS, RD, CSR, CSG

Registered Dietitian

Melanie Betz MS, RD, CSR, CSG is a Registered Dietitian at the University of Chicago in the Section of Nephrology. She provides outpatient nutrition education and counseling to patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, nephrolithiasis, Polycystic Kidney Disease, and other kidney related disorders. She received her Bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Michigan State University and completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition at Rush University Medical Center. Ms. Betz is certified in renal and geriatric nutrition. Her research interests include patient knowledge and adherence to renal diets, plant based diets in kidney disease and the role of nutrition in kidney stone prevention. She volunteers for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and Healthy Aging, a practice group of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. She also manages a website, aimed to provide science-based nutrition information to people with kidney stones and other kidney diseases.
